Cookout and Panel discussion on Immigration and Labor
Featuring Jordan Manalastas
WHAT
Labor is segmented by any number of arbitrary divisions. Perhaps the most palpable of these is borders, which divides “native” from migrant workers. The threat of harassment and deportation is wielded by both employers and the state in order to underpay and deny benefits to employees. Join us at Woodbine for an afternoon discussion on the specific conditions of exploitation among the immigrant working class in America and New York in particular. Our guests will include Jordan Manalastas, graduate of Cornell Law School whose work with The Farmworker Legal Assistance Clinic of Cornell Law School serves low-income immigrant workers, primarily in Central and Western New York. He will be joined by a to be announced local organizer in immigrant communities, to take part in an open discussion on the increasingly hostile and antagonistic labor market that undocumented workers in the United States face. Stay with us after the discussion for food, drinks, and further informal conversation.
